After the Hollow
神宮前のギャラリー”HENKYO”では7/18(土)より木工作家の盛永省治による個展
「After the Hollow」を開催いたします。
作品を制作する中で生まれた「内側の空間」への関心から着想を得た本展では、
これまでのボウルやベースの制作を通して培われた技術と感覚をもとに、新たな造形表現へと展開した新作を発表いたします。

ー作家ステイトメントー
今回の展示に向けて制作を進める中で、これまでより少し大きな作品に取り組み始めました。
制作から梱包、発送までを一人で行う私にとって、重量は避けて通れない課題です。
そのため作品の内部を刳り抜き、軽量化する必要がありました。
穴の空いたスツールも、その発想から生まれています。
いくつかの作品で内刳りを繰り返すうちに、深く削り進めた内部の空間に、言葉では説明しきれない魅力を感じるようになりました。
内刳りは、作品を軽くするための工程ではなく、作品の内側に空間を生み出す行為でもあったのです。
その空間をどのように形として現すことができるのか。
その問いから、今回の甕のようなシリーズが生まれました。
ボウルやベースの制作で繰り返してきた作業の経験があったからこそ、薄く削り上げたこれらの形はごく自然に立ち現れました。
これらの作品は、外側を造形したものではないのかもしれません。
内側を削り続けた結果、最後に残された輪郭です。

盛永省治｜Shoji Morinaga
大工や家具職人を経験した後、２００７年に独立。
鹿児島を拠点に活動。
様々な樹種を素材に、彫刻と工芸の境界を横断する作品を制作。
木が持つ時間や記憶、重さ、湿度、割れや歪みと向き合い、
器や椅子などの用途の記憶を残しながら、機能に回収されない曖昧な形態を通して、
量塊、空洞、触覚性を探求している。

HENKYO is pleased to present “After the Hollow,” a solo exhibition by Japanese woodworker Shoji Morinaga, opening on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Inspired by the artist’s growing fascination with the “inner space” that emerges through the process of making, this exhibition presents a new body of sculptural works that expands beyond his established practice of crafting bowls and vases. Building upon the techniques and sensibilities developed through these functional forms, Morinaga explores a new sculptural language that gives shape to the hidden spaces within. Artist Statement
While preparing for this exhibition, I began creating works that were slightly larger than those I had made before. Since I handle every stage of the process myself—from making the work to packing and shipping—it is essential to keep the weight manageable. This required hollowing out the interior of each piece to reduce its weight. The stools with openings also originated from this practical consideration.
As I repeatedly hollowed out the interiors of several works, I gradually became fascinated by the deeply carved spaces within—spaces that possess a compelling quality beyond what words can fully describe. Hollowing was no longer simply a method of reducing weight; it became an act of creating space inside the work itself.
I began asking myself how that inner space could be given form. That question led to this new series of vessel-like sculptures.
Because of the countless hours I had spent making bowls and vases, these thinly carved forms emerged with remarkable naturalness. Perhaps these works were never shaped from the outside. They are the contours that remained after I continued carving away the inside.
