“ Empty Transept ”
The man was a sculptor. He had once aspired to be an architect, inspired by his grandfather, but ultimately found himself fascinated by sculptures. He discovered an aesthetic in his own work that was similar to architecture, and spent many years chipping away at wood and stone. However, he felt uncomfortable. He had been creating his works for something—or someone—but he could not remember what that “something” was.
One day, he had a dream. In this dream, pillars stood in rows, arches intersected, and walls stretched on endlessly. Looking up, he saw no ceiling and there were no doors or windows in the walls, yet light poured down from somewhere. No, it was not a wall. It was an endless stack of books. The bookshelves were lined with countless volumes, all of which contained drawings and blueprints of his sculptures. Some of them contained records that the man did not even know about. Soon, a passerby appeared and asked him,
“What are these records for?”
“Who knows? I just continue to keep drawing.”
The passerby picked up one book and flipped through it.
“This is not a memory, but an emptiness.”
The man did not answer.
“When will you finish your work?”
“Never.”
“So you’ll become part of the drawings too, won’t you?”
When he woke up, he was overcome by a strange sense of urgency. He knew he had to create something, but he didn’t know what. He just couldn’t shake the feeling that the world from his dream existed somewhere.
One day, approaching sixty, he was sketching on a hill when two birds fell from above. No, they weren’t birds. They were stones carved into the shape of beautiful birds. They landed right in front of him, and one of the birds’ wings was broken. Looking up, all he could see was the vast blue sky.
